Message from the Webmaster, Francois Vaillant
I was born in 1942 in Carhaix in Finistere.(29)
My father was a Breton (from Brittany) born in 1905 in Landivisau (29),
from a family line dating from 1595 from Pougastel-Daoulas (29).
My mother was a Garcelon born in 1900 at “St Thomas” in Mauriac (Cantal - 15).
Her origin dates from St. Bonnet de Salers (Cantal - 15) from around 1640.
I married a woman from Normandy who was a native of the Eure (27) ,
her origin being St. Cyr de Salerne (27).

Wishing to get to know my mother’s origins, we have found many Garcelons along the way.
We began our search in 1997 by taking notes by hand.

Living quite a distance from the Cantal, taking photographs of documents and numbering them has turned out very well.
We take them home where we have more time to read and study them, especially the notaries’ documents which sometimes take longer to decipher.

On the other hand, it is thanks to these documents that we have been able to reconstruct some cross sections of the life of these Garcelons : tenant farming agreements, constitutions of organizations (1688), marriage contracts, powers of attorney, receipts, and the record offices from Aurillac are well supplied with material.

Our goal: to continue turning up “cousins”, to contact people with this name, to better get to know the history of these Garcelons, to make these efforts known as well as possible and to relay the results to those interested.

And to make all of this attractive so as to interest the beginners.

But all this may take too much time!

The contacts with the living are not lacking, but we have less production
